Those of you who have come to our benefit in the past knew that items would be wrapped but you would not know what was inside. The bidding was "blind" and all you knew was that you were bidding on something nice and that it was worth at least $25.

This year we are switching to a "silent auction" where you bring your UNWRAPPED gift for the auction. The details are in the body of this page.

How it works

The Benefit's goal is to raise money to help pay for production and distribution of our newsletter, "Skjold News". The proceeds also help reduce the cost of membership for all members.

Members purchase items throughout the year and donate them to the auction.  Items from Norway or with a Norwegian theme are best, but any item is fine.

A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, “is this an item I would want myself?”

The items should be worth approximately $25 in valueNEW ITEMS ONLY PLEASE! We have had a few occasions where members have brought a used or "white elephant" items, not understanding that these should be NEW, NICE, and SOMETHING YOU WOULD WANT FOR YOURSELF.

This year we will combine a SILENT AUCTION and MOVIE TIME!

While the silent auction is going on we will be showing the Norwegian movie, "The Wave" complete with "movie snacks".

MOVIE DESCRIPTION FROM ROTTEN TOMATOES: Nestled in Norway's Sunnmøre region, Geiranger is one of the most spectacular tourist draws on the planet. With the mountain Åkerneset overlooking the village - and constantly threatening to collapse into the fjord - it is also a place where cataclysm could strike at any moment. After putting in several years at Geiranger's warning center, geologist Kristian is moving on to a prestigious gig with an oil company. But the very day he's about to drive his family to their new life in the city, Kristian senses something isn't right. The substrata are shifting. No one wants to believe that this could be the big one, especially with tourist season at its peak, but when that mountain begins to crumble, every soul in Geiranger has ten minutes to get to high ground before a tsunami hits, consuming everything in its path.

Join the fun!

This year we will be trying a slightly different format. Bring your new item worth approximately $25 to our meeting WITHOUT wrapping. We will do a silent auction, i.e., items will be put out with a sheet of paper on which you can place your bids at any time during the meeting. Others may come along and top your bid. The auction is finally closed and the highest bidder wins the item. While this is going on, we will watch a Norwegian movie and have “movie snacks.”

In the past, some members who wanted to support Skjold News, but were unable to attend the benefit, sent a donation check instead.  Some of our out-of-city or out-of-state members have even mailed gifts for the auction. Send your donation to:
